Who needs to use UK SORA?

Any UAS operator who wants to conduct flights that fall outside the Open category rules, or outside PDRA-01 operational authorisation boundaries, must apply for an specific Operational Authorisation with the CAA. This application must follow UK SORA - or another accepted means of compliance with Article 11 of UK Regulation (EU) 2019/947).

Are there operations for which UK SORA cannot be used?

Officially, UK SORA cannot be used for: operations carrying people or carrying dangerous goods that could result in high risk to third parties; flying over assemblies of people with a UA that has a characteristic dimension of 3 metres or more; UAS with a dimension larger than 40 metres or a maximum cruise speed above 200 m/s; operations above Flight Level 660; or large or fast UAS (more than 3m or over 35 m/s) where population density exceeds 50,000 people/km².
