UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) is running a market engagement on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, calling on industry to help defeat an increasingly common and difficult threat: drones guided by fibre optic cables — invisible to standard radio frequency jamming.
The conflict in Ukraine has accelerated drone technology at a remarkable pace. One of the most challenging developments is the use of fibre optic tethers to control UAS, bypassing conventional electronic countermeasures entirely. The MOD now wants to know what industry can do about it.
What the MOD is looking for
"MOD is seeking novel (and potentially repurposed) capabilities to detect, track, identify and defeat fibre optically controlled UAS. Solutions should integrate seamlessly into a layered, open-architecture system approach (e.g., SAPIENT – an MOD common data standard) and deliver clear tactical advantages, including: optimisation of lethality, engagement timelines, and cost effectiveness.
Future adversary adaptation should also be considered. Solutions may be for fixed sites or mobile tactical users, who are expected to operate in far-forward frontline positions."
In scope
Detection, tracking, identification and defeat of fibre optic-controlled UAS; integrated capabilities (e.g. audio detection + cable defeat); fixed-site and mobile solutions.
Out of scope
Broader counter-UAS approaches not specific to fibre optic control; operator protection; general kinetic defeat of the UAS.
